Duplication of Effort

Duplication of Effort is doing something more than once that doesn't need to be done more than once.

Duplication of effort isn't always a bad thing. If you are doing something you enjoy or you are trying to come up an innovative and/or better way of doing something you're probably not to worried about duplication of effort.

On the other hand, duplication of effort often happens because people working on a particular problem or issue aren't aware of or don't have (free or reasonably priced) access to previous work in the field or are just not aware of others working on the same problem. This is certainly the case in local government, and many people (including ratepayers) would be better off if this sort of duplication of effort could be reduced or eradicated.

Reducing Duplication of Effort

An excellent way of reducing duplication of effort is organising and sharing knowledge, and wikis are an excellent and cost effective way of organising and sharing knowledge.
